What is a BioBlitz

it is a short period (a designated day or time interval) of intense biological surveying in an attempt to record as many biological data (samples/observations/pictures) as possible, relying on communal citizen-science effort. It is becoming a widespread approach in ornithological and entomological studies.

Spot-the-Monk BioBlitzs

– in order to better understand the distribution, population dynamics,  seasonal movements and the home range of such a wide-ranging mammal species, such as monk seal, it is necessary to monitor its traces:

• Simultaneously: in different districts of the Mediterranean, in order to gather clues about the species abundance;
• Repeatedly: in different months of the year, in order to gather clues about the year-round movements;
• Regularly: at given intervals, in order to cover all seasons homogenously.

How does the StM BioBlitz campaign work?

Every 6 weeks, on a specific day (plus/minus one day), all our collaborators collect a water sample from the position in which they are!
