Unveiling the Secrets of the Mediterranean monk seal
Spot the Monk is a monitoring project, launched in 2019 by Elena Valsecchi of the Marine eDNA Group of the University of Milano Bicocca, based on a molecular approach for a non-invasive detection of the monk seal presence by means of environmental DNA analysis.
Our groundbreaking methodology involves the collection of seawater samples, from which we extract and analyze environmental DNA. This cutting-edge technique allows us to identify traces of the presence of monk seals without any disturbance to them and their natural habitat.
The Observatory Experience (Since 2024)
In 2024, Spot the Monk expanded its horizons by opening its Observatory to both scientific and non-scientific audiences. Our Observatory serves as a window into the hidden world of the monk seal, providing a progressive display of data derived from samples and molecular detection. As soon as seawater samples are analyzed, the results are promptly loaded onto our platform, making them immediately accessible for consultation.
Key Features:
- Real-Time Data Display: Witness the dynamic world of monk seals through our real-time data display. As each sample is processed, the results are seamlessly integrated, offering an up-to-date overview of the evidence of monk seal distribution in the Mediterranean.
- Accessible to All: The Spot the Monk Observatory is designed for everyone. Whether you’re an experienced scientist or a curious enthusiast, our platform welcomes you to explore the Spot-the-Monk results in real time. The data is presented in an easily understandable format, bridging the gap between scientific research and public engagement.
- Educational Insights: Immerse yourself in the educational dimension of Spot the Monk. Learn about the molecular techniques employed, the significance of environmental DNA analysis, and the critical role each person plays in the conservation of this endangered species.
